Teargas At Lekki Toll Gate Again, Six Years After EndSARS
12 days ago
Police fired teargas at mourners, journalists and two Lagos governorship candidates at the Lekki Toll Gate yesterday during the sixth anniversary of the EndSARS protests. Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour and Funso Doherty were among those affected as participants gathered to honour victims, including journalist Pelumi Onifade. Six years. Same toll gate. Same teargas.
A new Foundation for Investigative Journalism report alleges that police extortion and brutality remain widespread six years after SARS was disbanded. So we renamed the monster and it kept eating. The panel sat, the reports were written, and the young ones are still being slapped at checkpoints from Ibadan to Enugu.
Meanwhile Nigeria has confirmed an Ebola case in the FCT after a woman who travelled from Uganda tested positive, with 44 close contacts identified. And in the same week, Nyesom Wike is urging Rivers youths to back Bola Tinubu in 2027 while calling Atiku Abubakar untrustworthy. Teargas for mourners, campaign talk for the living. Which one of these should an ordinary Nigerian hold onto tonight?
