I Told My Best Friend Her Fiancé Was Cheating. I Lied. I Wanted Him for Myself.

This was back in 2021, I was 28, working as a front desk officer in a hotel in Ikeja. My best friend Folasade and I had been tight since our NYSC days in Kwara. She was the one person who knew everything about me. Then she started dating Dapo, a surveyor from Ondo, and I watched her build a whole life around him. I liked Dapo. Too much. It started small, the way I would dress nicer when I knew he was coming to pick her, the way I laughed at his dry jokes. Then one evening he came to the hotel to drop something for her and we ended up talking for two hours in the lobby. Nothing happened. But I wanted it to. So I lied. I told Folasade I saw Dapo at a lounge in VI with a woman, that they were holding hands. She cried for three days. He swore it was not true, but I was her best friend, so who was she going to believe? She called off the wedding two months before the date. Dapo never found out it was me. Folasade and I are still friends on Facebook, but we do not talk. She is married now to someone else, and I hear she is happy. I see her posts and I feel like a thief who was never caught. I did not even end up with Dapo. He blocked me after the whole thing. I lost a sister for a man who was never mine. If you have ever thought about sabotaging your friend for a man, remember this: the man will leave, but the shame will stay. And you will have to live with yourself.
