The day I found my daughter's school fees receipt in my husband's shirt pocket

I was sorting laundry last month, Thursday evening, the kind of tired that makes you do things on autopilot. My hand entered my husband's shirt pocket and came out with a folded paper. I almost threw it in the bin without looking. Something told me to open it.
It was a school fees receipt. For our daughter's school. ₦185,000. Paid in full. Three weeks before I had spent two hours at her school bursary office arguing about a payment plan because my husband told me things were tight at his office.
I sat on the bedroom floor with that receipt in my hand for a long time. He came in later and met me there. I didn't shout. I just held it up. He looked at it and then looked at the wall.
We talked until 1am. Not about the money. About why he felt he had to carry that alone and then lie about it. He said he didn't want me to worry. I told him worry is what marriage is for.
That receipt is still in my drawer. I kept it. Not to use against him. Just to remind myself that sometimes the person protecting you is also the one shutting you out.
